back to reality

you know globalisation is truely a fact of life when your elderly father in his 70s, who lives in another country, and doesnt believe in email or mobile phones, calls to ask "who this shilpa shetty character is."
i cant believe this whole debate. i havent got a TV, and i have never seen the show, but even if it is the most amazing one ever broadcast, i still dont understand how it has managed to hog front page news for a week and seemingly obsesses both the indian and british governments. my collegues at work talk about nothing else. i am totally lost.
oi. my holiday is long over now and only slowly am i managing to accept this sad fact. i have been busy the past few days, running around meeting friends of my father, then taking the beast to the vet, then my job....i have got myself transfered to the travel section for the past several nights in a row, most people dont like working up there, but it is definately my favourite place. even if i am stuck in a bookshop, i get to look at really cool pictures form all over the world, real guide books, and plot mental holidays that i dont have the money to take. it is the most painless way to pay the rent, at least to my mind.

I haven't seen the show either. The funny thing about seeing the remarks in question just written down in the paper is why Jade Goody got the worst of it, contemptible though her outbursts were. I though Danielle Lloyd's comments about "Indians, or is it Chinese eating with their hands, and you don't know where they've been", were worse.
I was surprised as well to hear comments about what it means for C4's future remit. I thought it was entirely funded by advertising, bit apparently it does get some public funding.

jade goody always seemed to appear horrible in every foto they got of her too. she looks like a screaming lunatic most of the time....i also couldnt believe one show could effect the future of a channel, but i stand corrected. some of my collegues are taking this really seriously, indian and white alike. one of them called shilpa "the pride of india" i just shake my head in amazement.....clearly there is a whole world of tv out there i cant even imagine, much less understand!

Partly funding and partly just access to further digital chanels etc. I suppose they have two choices. "We can make programmes featuring people who have brains, talent and personality, but which only generate revenue via advertising between them. Or we can make programmes featuring people with no brains, no talent and no personality, which generate massive revenue via phone-ins. Sadly, it seems said people, chosen on the basis of how freakish and mutually antagonistic they are, turn out to sometimes conflict over things of more consequence than the washing-up, thus causing international outcry and a totally skewed perception of race relations in the UK. Hmmm, well we got by without phone-in revenue for 15 years or so. Maybe BB's days are numbered."

I went to an Indian friend's birthday lunch yesterday, and the attitude of her and her family was detached amusement. Jade and girlfriends obviously embody the same crap they've had on a daily basis since they were in the playground, and it's all off a duck's back now. They were equally tickled by the news of Indian protesters burning effigies of C4 producers. Apparently a burning effigy of yourself is the Indian equivalent of an ASBO, in terms of REAL credibility. Way cool !

what i really like is that now they seem to be finding all kinds of copycat jade goodys on other shows (so tells me the London Lite Metro rag) and jade, meanwhile, claims she is afraid to go home and need police protection. wierd.
