i asked my supposedly advanced business students to explain to me in their own words what "team building" means.
pasha: "team building is when you are with boss drinking."
Denis: "team building is when you are with collegues drinking."
Sergei: "team building is when boss is drinks buying."
lena: "team building is what they are doing in the american companies."
groan. at that i clenched my jaw and reminded myself it is friday.

i can relate to your sentiments.........i am a 48 year old veterinary student....i live in the florida.........what is team building?!......one would think working together as a group, helping each other to accomplish tasks that need to be done, sharing ideas and problem solving, etc.........at vet school.........team building consists of.....going out to the local bar and drinking..........schmoozing........gossiping.......when it comes to daily clinical activities............it is every man for himself, with some exceptions of course..........the schmoozers and drinkers who have fun with the residents and clinicians will be sure to receive get a better grade than the quiet, intelligent, and studious person who chooses not to participate in those types of activities......that person will not be considered part of the crowd.....is drinking 'team-building'...........i suppose it is........even if that is not your or my definition of the concept.....
you may have a point....i suppose my students werent so far off the mark after all!
